Did you know that gray whales are nicknamed "the devil fish"?
This nickname results from their aggressive behavior when harpooned. They are the only living members of the baleen whale family, and what distinguishes them from other baleen families is their feeding habit -- they are predominantly bottom feeders.
Want to learn more fun facts about the gray whale?
Join in celebrating the return of gray whales to Monterey Bay at the Whalefest Monterey Festival at the Old Fisherman's Wharf and Custom House Plaza in Downtown Monterey State Historic Park.
This marks the 12th Annual Whalefest Monterey, scheduled for March 19th and 20th, 2022.
Event Overview
The event is a free, fun, and educational family interaction for people of all ages. It celebrates the biodiversity of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
This year features a 2-day symposium with world-renowned marine experts. Activities include boat displays, live musicians, and dozens of marine exhibit booths from local and national organizations.
You'll witness these massive creatures in their natural habitat on whale-watching tours departing from the Old Fisherman's Wharf. You'll also observe dolphins, orcas, and pelicans. The bay provides excellent sightings of dolphins, porpoises, pinnipeds, and whales.
Dining at Tarpy's
After the event, enjoy dinner at Tarpy's, managed by Coastal Roots Hospitality. The restaurant offers ribs, meatloaf, steak, fresh seafood, and American cuisine. Their wine collection features reds, whites, bubbles, and Sauvignon Blanc.
